MAINSHAFT c/w THIRD AND LOW GEAR
Gearbox mainshaft complete with third and low gear, PN 57-4040 (formerly 57-1959/T4040).
This is the gearbox mainshaft, sold complete with third and low gear, part number 57-4040 (older catalogs list it as T4040 or 57-1959 before a factory renumbering). It lives inside the gearbox shell, under the inner cover, and it's one of the two main shafts the whole gearbox turns around — the layshaft being the other.

Because it comes through as an assembly with third and low gear already on it, this is meant to save you from sorting out separate gear and shaft part numbers when you're rebuilding the box. It shows up in the gearbox shafts, bearings, and inner cover section of the parts books, spanning catalog entries from 1970 into 1974.
If you're rebuilding a gearbox, pull the old shaft and compare the gear teeth and spline count against what you've got before ordering, since gearbox internals changed over the years and the parts books don't spell out every variant here. Call the shop if you want us to check what you're working with.
