Layshaft c/w 2nd and high gear (14/24T)
Triumph gearbox layshaft complete with 2nd and high gear (14/24T), later superseded by 57-4042.
The 57-1960 is a layshaft for the gearbox, sold complete with 2nd and high gear cut 14/24T. It lives in the gearbox internals, in the shafts-and-bearings area covered by the GEARBOX SHAFTS, BEARINGS AND INNER COVER figure. If you're pulling the gearbox apart and finding worn teeth or chipped gears on the layshaft cluster, this is the piece that carries 2nd and high gear together as one assembly.

Older parts books list this same piece under T1960, so if you're working from an earlier book that's the number to cross off against 57-1960. Triumph later revised the part and it now shows up as 57-4042 in current supply, so if you're ordering fresh stock or trying to match a replacement to an older engine, know that both numbers point to the same job in the gearbox even though the part number moved on.
This one appears across a run of catalog years from the mid-to-late 1960s in Triumph's records, so it was in production use for a good stretch before the later part number took over. If you're not sure which version your box needs, have the numbers off your existing shaft and the gearbox casing markings ready when you call.
