SHIFT FORK 500 TRIUMPH - LAYSHAFT 1958-74
Layshaft selector fork for the Triumph 350/500 twin gearbox, moves the sliding gear to change ratios.
This is the layshaft selector fork out of the gearbox on the Triumph 350 and 500 twins, listed in the parts books under 57-1481 and, in the older lettered format, T1481. It lives inside the gearbox inner cover area, riding in the groove machined around the sliding gear on the layshaft.

The fork's job is simple but critical: when you move the gear lever, the selector mechanism pushes this fork sideways, and the fork drags the sliding gear along the layshaft to change ratios. If the fork is worn, bent, or the fingers have thinned out from years of contact with the gear groove, you'll feel it as sloppy or incomplete shifts, jumping out of gear, or trouble finding neutral.
Catalog records show this part appearing across gearbox shafts and inner cover listings through the mid-to-late 1960s. It's a mechanical wear item, not something with a fixed service life, so the usual approach is to pull the gearbox and inspect the fork fingers and the sliding gear groove for wear before deciding whether to replace it.
