Crankshaft gear, electric start

Crankshaft timing gear for electric-start Triumph engines, sits on the crank and drives the timing gear train.

PN · 71-7679

This is the crankshaft timing gear off an electric-start Triumph engine, part number 71-7679. It lives on the end of the crankshaft down in the bottom end, and it's what drives the timing side gear train that keeps the camshafts and ignition in sync with crank rotation.

The catalog ties this one specifically to electric-start engines, so it's not a straight swap with the gear off a kickstart-only motor — the electric-start crank and gear train were set up differently to run the starter drive. Our records show it turning up in crankshaft and connecting rod sections of the parts books across the early-to-mid '80s.

If you're rebuilding a bottom end on an electric-start engine and pulling the old gear for inspection, check the teeth and the bore fit before you decide whether to reuse it or replace it. Give us a call if you're not sure whether your crank is the electric-start version — it's worth confirming before you order.
