It's a small rubber piece but it does real work — it takes up the gap between carb and manifold so you get an airtight seal there, which matters for how the engine pulls air and how it idles. After years of carbs coming off and going back on for cleaning or jetting, these rings tend to go flat, crack, or take a permanent cupped set, which is usually when people notice an air leak or a lean-running problem they can't pin down.
