This is a small, easy-to-lose piece of hardware that keeps a gear indexed correctly on its shaft so it can't spin independently of the crank. Given the figure it appears in, it's tied into the timing side of the engine bottom end.
Our catalog entries for this one span 1963-1964, but we don't have enough in the record to pin it to a specific model. If you're rebuilding the timing gear train, check the key against what's actually on your crankshaft before ordering, and give us a call if you want help confirming fitment.
