Cable adjuster
A cable adjuster used at the control lever end to take slack out of a cable; later renumbered 18/838.
This is a cable adjuster, the small threaded fitting that lets you take slack out of a control cable at the lever end without pulling the whole cable off the bike. It shows up repeatedly in the handlebar and control lever sections of the parts books, which is where you'd expect to find it, since it sits right where the cable enters the lever body or perch.

Our records show this one carrying the number 18/1005 across a run of catalog listings from the mid-to-late 1960s, and the factory later renumbered it to 18/838. If your parts book or an old cable kit lists 18/838 instead, that's the same piece under its later number.
It also turns up in a battery/toolkit/air filter figure, so it's worth checking your own control lever assembly to be sure you're ordering the version that matches your setup rather than assuming one fits all.
