Small square-cut key that locks the alternator rotor to the crankshaft so it turns in sync with the crank.

This is the rotor key, a small square-section key that locates the alternator rotor onto the crankshaft so the rotor turns exactly with the crank instead of slipping on the taper or shaft. It lives right where the crankshaft and connecting rods come together in the parts book, seated in a keyway that mates the rotor to the crank end.
