Camplate index plunger
The spring-loaded camplate index plunger that locates the gearbox selector mechanism in each gear position.
This is the camplate index plunger out of the gearbox, the small spring-loaded piece that rides against the camplate and drops into each notch to hold the gearbox in gear. It's part of the selector mechanism and shows up in the parts book under the GEARBOX INNER COVER AND SELECTORS and GEARBOX SELECTOR MECHANISM figures. If your gearbox is hunting between gears or feels like it won't stay put in a given ratio, this plunger and its spring are one of the first things worth checking.

Older parts books list this one under the T44 number, which is the same physical part as 57-0044 in the current numbering. It shows up across catalog entries from 1960 through 1969, so it's a long-running fitment across that stretch of gearbox production.
It's a small, inexpensive item to keep on hand if you're already in the gearbox for other work, since it's easy to overlook a worn plunger or a tired spring once everything else is buttoned back up.
