The coil takes low-voltage current from the points and battery and steps it up to fire the spark plug. On these bikes it lives in the electrical tray or toolbox area alongside the other ignition and charging components shown in the same figures - rectifier, zener diode, capacitor, horn.
If your parts book still lists 45223, know that the factory later renumbered this same coil to 45276G - same physical part, newer catalog number. Worth checking which number your bike's documentation uses before you order, and give us a call if you want help confirming fitment.
