NUT,CAPTIVE PANEL SCREW
Captive square nut that seats in the frame receiver behind the side cover, letting the panel knob thread home without tools.
This is the captive nut that lives behind the side cover on the frame, part number 83-0222 (also known by the earlier F10222 designation). It sits in a square receiver on the frame so it can't spin when you're trying to get the panel knob started, which is the whole point of the design - you push the nut into its pocket and then thread the side cover knob into it without needing a wrench on the other end.

It shows up in the parts books under PANELS AND TWINSEAT / PANEL AND TWINSEAT, and it's a small, easy thing to lose track of or mangle over the years if the receiver pocket gets buggered up or the nut works itself loose in there. Cheap enough insurance to have a spare on the shelf so you're not fighting a stripped or wallowed-out fitting when you go to put the side cover back on.
Catalog appearances put this one across 1970 to 1974 production. If you're not sure your bike's side panel fastening matches this style, bring the frame receiver or the old nut to the counter and we'll match it up before you order.
