Kickstarter pawl
A kickstarter pawl for the gearbox inner cover assembly, engaging the kickstart ratchet to turn the engine over.
Part number 71431 is a kickstarter pawl, one of the small but important pieces inside the gearbox inner cover that lets the kickstart mechanism do its job. When you swing the kickstart lever down, the pawl engages a ratchet on the kickstart quadrant or gear, transmitting that swing into rotation of the mainshaft to turn the engine over. Once the engine fires, the pawl disengages so the kickstart doesn't spin along with everything else.

This part shows up in the gearbox shafts, bearings, and inner cover section of the parts books, which lines up with where the kickstart mechanism lives on these gearboxes. The catalog listings span 1966 through 1970 across the several appearances we have on file, but we don't have a breakdown by specific model here, so if you're matching this to a particular bike, it's worth checking your own parts book or giving us a call to confirm before ordering.
The manufacturer tag on this one says Lucas, but a kickstarter pawl is a mechanical gearbox internal, not an electrical component, so that tag doesn't hold up - this is a gearbox part, plain and simple, regardless of what the catalog code implies.
