SPEEDO PINION
A speedo drive pinion from the gearbox gear train, used to turn the speedometer cable off the gearbox.
The 57-1744 is a speedo pinion, one of the small gears that drives the speedometer cable off the gearbox. It shows up in the parts book under the GEARBOX SHAFTS AND GEARS heading, so it lives down in the gearbox where the drive is taken off to run the speedo cable up to the instrument head. Older parts books list this same piece under the T1744 number, so if you're working from an early catalog and see that stamped on the page, it's the same part.

These pinions don't get much attention until the speedo starts reading wrong or stops working altogether, at which point a worn pinion is one of the usual suspects. It's a small, inexpensive item to keep on the shelf if you're doing gearbox work and don't want to have to stop and order one mid-job.
We don't have a lot more written down on this one beyond its place in the gearbox gear train. If you're not sure it's the right pinion for your box, give us a call and we'll help sort out fitment before you order.
Sorry if we got something wrong here. If you think this information isn't correct, .
