Kickstarter return spring
The spring inside the gearbox that returns the kickstart lever to its resting position after use.
57-0031 is the kickstarter return spring inside the gearbox. It's the part that snaps the kickstart lever back up to its resting position after you've swung it through to fire the engine. It lives down in the gearbox area and shows up in the parts book across the gearbox outer cover and inner cover/selector diagrams.

This one has been cataloged across gearboxes from the mid-70s through 1980 in our records, so it covers a fair run of unit-construction twins from that era. If your kickstart lever feels weak on the return, sits limp instead of snapping back, or you've had it stick down after use, this spring is usually the first thing to check.
It's a simple, inexpensive part to keep on the shelf, and since it's tucked inside the gearbox cover, replacing it means the cover's coming off anyway, so it's worth doing while you're in there rather than waiting for it to fail on its own.
