This is a 12 volt ignition coil, PN 45276, built by PVL in Germany. The catalog also carries it under number 55.184, same physical part, just the other number some parts books print. It's a straightforward electrical component that steps up battery voltage to fire the spark plug, and it's built to the same general size and mounting footprint as the later 40mm Lucas coils, so it drops into the same spot those coils use.
