BSA Key — camshaft pinion
A locating key for the camshaft pinion, fitted where the gear meets the camshaft in the crankcase gear cluster.
This is a small key that locates the camshaft pinion on the crankcase end of the camshaft, keeping the gear from spinning independently of the shaft it drives. It's a simple piece but it does real work — without it properly seated, cam timing can slip relative to the crank, which throws off valve events.

Our catalog record shows it living in the crankcase and gear cluster figures, right where the camshaft pinion mounts. It appears across a run of catalog entries from 1969 to 1972, so it's a part that shows up consistently in that window of records, though we can't tie it to one specific model from what we have here.
The part is also listed under the older number 40-118, so if your parts book or an old invoice shows that instead of 40-0118, it's the same piece. Small parts like this are easy to lose track of during a teardown, so it's worth keeping one on hand if you're pulling the gear cluster apart.
We've never carried this one. Tell us what you're after and we'll go looking — you'll get a price and photos before you commit to anything.
