A lock ring like this one is used to hold a bearing or hub component in its proper seated position, keeping things from working loose as the wheel spins and takes on load. Because this part turns up across multiple wheel configurations in the catalog, including the speedo drive box setup, it's worth checking your own wheel arrangement against the parts book before ordering to make sure you're getting the right one for your build.
The catalog appearances run from 1974 into 1985, so this is a part that stuck around across a fair number of production years. Beyond that span, we don't have more detail on this one — give the shop a call if you want help confirming exactly which wheel setup you've got.
