Keepers are the small tapered locks that seat into the top of the valve stem groove and hold the spring retainer (collar) under spring tension, keeping the valve assembly together in the head. Because these are cut for the larger ID found on aftermarket alloy collars rather than stock steel ones, they're meant to be used as a matched set with those collars rather than mixed with stock parts.
