This is the Pazon combination regulator/rectifier, JRC-17-100, and it's built to run on either a 6 volt or 12 volt system. It takes the raw AC output off the alternator, converts it to DC, and holds charging voltage where it needs to be so the battery isn't getting cooked or starved.

On older British bikes this one unit is doing the job that used to take a separate rectifier and a mechanical or zener-diode regulator, so it's a common upgrade when someone's tidying up an electrical system or chasing a charging problem that keeps coming back.
