Self locking nut
A self-locking nut (82-3799, later 21-5161) used across electrical, cycle, and exhaust fittings on these motorcycles.
This is a self-locking nut, catalog number 82-3799, older factory form F3799. It shows up all over the parts books, from headlamp nacelle and switch assemblies to ignition coil and rectifier mounting, mudguard and fender fixings, exhaust bracketry, and swinging fork and suspension unit hardware. That spread tells you it's a general-purpose fastener the factory used wherever they wanted a nut that would stay put against vibration without a separate lock washer.

Because it turns up in so many different figures across such a long catalog run, this isn't a nut tied to one system or one job. Ed's advice is simple: match it to whatever bracket, stud, or mounting point you're working on rather than assuming it belongs to any one assembly.
The factory eventually renumbered this part to 21-5161, so if your bike's later parts book lists that number instead, it's the same physical nut. Worth keeping a few in the tin since self-locking nuts get reused often on cycle parts, electrics, and exhaust work alike.
