‘O’ ring shift spindle
O-ring seal for the shift spindle where it passes through the primary chaincase.
This is the O-ring that seals the shift spindle where it passes through the chaincase, as shown in the chaincase and chains figures. It keeps the primary oil in and road grime out around the shaft that the gear lever mechanism rides on. It's a small, cheap-to-replace item, and if yours has gone hard or flat you'll usually see oil seeping out around the shift shaft on the chaincase side.

Catalog listings for 60-2640 run from 1976 to 1980. Triumph later renumbered this part to 60-3530, so if you're working from a newer parts book or a later machine, that's the number you may see instead — same physical seal.
Because it's part of the chaincase sealing, it's worth replacing any time you have the cover off for other work rather than waiting for it to fail on its own.
