Layshaft cluster (17T) Std.
Standard 17-tooth layshaft cluster for the gearbox, also listed under the earlier T1591 number.
The 57-1591 is a layshaft cluster with a 17-tooth gear, standard spec, out of the gearbox internals. In the older parts books it was listed as T1591, so if you're working from an early catalog or a bike with the original tag still on the box, that's the number you'd have seen.

This one lives in the gearbox shafts and gears assembly, on the layshaft, which is the intermediate shaft that carries a set of gears between the mainshaft and the gearbox sprocket. The cluster is the machined shaft with its gears cut or pressed on as a unit, so when it wears or a tooth gets chipped you're typically replacing the whole assembly rather than a single gear.
Our catalog record ties this one to appearances from 1963 to 1964. If your box is outside that window, give us a call and we'll go over the numbers with you before you order, since gearbox internals changed enough over the years that it pays to double check.
