DOWEL,INNER GEAR BOX COVER
A locating dowel for the inner gearbox cover on unit Triumph gearboxes, part number 57-1440.
This is the dowel that locates the inner gearbox cover on unit-construction Triumph gearboxes. It's a small piece, but it does real work — it keeps the inner cover indexed correctly against the gearbox shell so the shafts and bearings line up the way they're supposed to every time you pull the cover off and put it back on. Without it, you're relying on the cover bolts alone to hold position, which isn't what the design intends.

In the parts books it's listed under the GEARBOX SHAFTS, BEARINGS AND INNER COVER figure, and it also shows up under the older T1440 number if you're working from an earlier parts book. Our catalog record covers appearances from 1964 through 1974, so it's been used across a good number of years of gearbox production.
It's cheap enough to just replace when you have the box open rather than reuse a dowel that's taken a knock or two. If you're in there doing shafts, bearings, or the inner cover itself, it's worth having a fresh one on hand.
