GEARBOX CASING
The main gearbox casing that houses the shafts, selectors, and bearings on the gearbox this fits.
The 57-1201 is the gearbox casing itself, the main shell that carries all the internal gearbox components. Everything else in the box - the mainshaft, layshaft, selectors, and bearings - locates inside this housing, so it is the foundation the rest of the gearbox is built around.

In the parts books this one shows up under the older T1201 number as well, which is the pre-decimal reference some earlier catalogs use for the same casting. Our records tie it to gearbox and casing figures spanning 1960 through 1962.
A gearbox casing takes a fair amount of abuse over the life of a bike - it holds oil, takes shock loads from the shafts, and mounts to the frame, so wear at the bearing bores or damage from a dropped gearbox is worth checking closely before you commit to one.
