The pinion is the small gear that rides on the mainshaft and engages with the kickstart quadrant when you swing the lever down. It's the piece that actually transmits that kick into turning the gearbox mainshaft to fire the engine over. Because it's engaging and disengaging every time the kickstart is used, it takes wear on the teeth over the years, and a worn pinion is a common cause of a kickstart that slips or won't hold engagement.
Our catalog record spans a long run of appearances across 650 and 750 twins, so this part has been used for a long stretch of production. If you're chasing a kickstart that clunks, slips, or doesn't catch reliably, this pinion and the mating quadrant and ratchet parts are the first place to look.
