The coil takes low-voltage current from the points and battery and steps it up to fire the spark plug, so it sits in the ignition circuit alongside the points, condenser, and battery. This large-diameter MA12 style shows up across a range of British twins and singles from this era, not just Triumph, so if you're chasing a replacement it helps to know which coil body size you're actually working with.
We don't have a lot more written down on this one beyond the catalog listing itself. If you're not sure whether your bike takes the MA12 or a different Lucas coil body, give us a call before you order and we'll sort out fitment.
