BSA Dowel, inner timing cover to crankcase
A locating dowel that aligns the inner timing cover to the crankcase.
This is a dowel that locates the inner timing cover against the crankcase, keeping the two castings aligned the same way every time the cover comes off and goes back on. It shows up in the parts books alongside the gear cluster, gearchange mechanism, and inner timing cover figures, which tells you it's doing its job right where the timing side of the engine meets the crankcase mouth.

Dowels like this one are simple but they matter more than their size suggests. If it's worn, bent, or missing, the inner timing cover can sit slightly off, which throws off the fit of everything that indexes off it, including the gearchange mechanism parts nearby. Cheap to overlook and a nuisance to chase down later if you skip checking it during a rebuild.
The catalog carries this part across several years of appearances, and it's also listed under the alternate form 40-394, so if your parts book shows that number you're looking at the same piece. Worth a look any time the timing cover is off the engine.
