This is a dowel used in the primary chaincase area, part of the inner and outer chaincase assembly with the hydraulic tensioner. Dowels like this one are used to keep the chaincase halves or cover aligned correctly when they're bolted together, so the joint seals up square and the parts line up the same way every time they're taken apart and put back on.
