O ring seal for the drain plug, keeps the joint from weeping oil.

This is the O ring that seats under the drain plug, sealing the joint so oil stays where it belongs when the plug is threaded back in. It's a simple rubber seal, but a tired or flattened one is a common reason for a weep or drip right after an oil change.
