Contact breaker points are what makes the ignition spark happen at the right moment. They sit under the timing cover, opening and closing as the cam inside the breaker assembly rotates, which triggers the coil to fire. Like any points set, they wear over time and gap needs to be checked periodically, since a worn or badly gapped set will throw off ignition timing and cost you performance or make the bike hard to start.
