TAPPET ADJ NUT 650 5/16 CEI - 3/16WW HEX
placeholder
This is the tappet adjuster locknut used on the cylinder head of Triumph's unit-construction 650 and 750 twins. It threads onto the tappet adjuster screw and locks it in place once the valve clearance is set, so the adjustment doesn't creep once the engine's running and heating up. In the parts books it shows up under the older E470 designation as well as 70-0470, so if you're working from an early catalog and see E470 called out, that's the same nut.

The catalog lists this nut across cylinder block and head sections for the 6T, TR6, TR6R, TR6C, T120, T140, and TR7RV lines, spanning a wide production run into the late 1970s. The description on file calls it a 5/16 CEI nut with a 3/16 Whitworth hex, which tells you the wrench size to reach for when you're setting clearances.
These nuts wear at the threads and the hex corners over time, especially if someone's been using the wrong size spanner on them, so it's worth checking yours whenever you're in there doing a valve clearance check. They're sold and used in sets of four, one per tappet adjuster, front and rear cylinder.
