Index plunger
A spring-loaded plunger that locates against the gearbox camplate to hold each gear selection in place.
The index plunger sits in the gearbox inner cover, working against the camplate to hold each gear position steady once you've selected it. It's a small spring-loaded part, but it does real work — without it seated properly you'll get a gearbox that feels vague between gears or won't stay put in the one you picked.

This one appears in the GEARBOX INNER COVER AND SELECTORS section of the parts books, across catalog listings running 1976 through 1985. If you're rebuilding a gearbox from that era and the shifting feels sloppy or gears seem to hunt for their detent, the index plunger is one of the first things worth checking along with its spring.
It's a wear item on any gearbox that's seen real mileage, so if you're already in there for a rebuild it's worth having a fresh one on hand rather than putting the old one back in and hoping.
