Layshaft c/w 2nd and high gears
Layshaft with 2nd and high gear fitted, for the gearbox internals, superseded later by 57-4041.
This is the layshaft assembly out of the gearbox, complete with 2nd and high (top) gear already mounted on it. It lives inside the gearbox shell along with the mainshaft, and it's the shaft that the sliding pinions and dogs engage against as you move through the gears. The older book number for this part is T1949, which shows up in parts lists before the numbering was standardized to the 57- prefix.

Our catalog record ties this to the gearbox shafts and inner cover setup, appearing across entries from 1964 to 1969. Triumph later superseded this part with 57-4041, so if you're chasing this down for a gearbox rebuild and your parts book shows either number, they're the same lineage of part and worth cross-checking against what's actually in the case.
When you're in there for a rebuild, it's worth inspecting the gear teeth and the shaft bearing surfaces for wear at the same time, since a layshaft this deep in the gearbox isn't something you want to pull twice.
