The 18D2 distributor was fitted to a range of Triumph and BSA machines running that ignition setup, and the cap is the part that seals over the distributor body, carrying the rotor arm contact and the connections that feed the plug leads down to the points and condenser underneath. It's a wear-and-tear item — cracks, carbon tracking, or a loose fit on the body are the usual reasons to swap one in.
